History

The first records of the company show it to have been established in 1767, originally as clothiers. An amalgamation of local clothiers in the later 18th century resulted in diversification into woollen textile manufacturing. The Ellis family were instrumental in founding the original company but it wasn't until the late 1830s that the name Joshua Ellis & Co Ltd was adopted.

For more than 200 years the name Joshua Ellis & Co Ltd has been synonymous with high quality luxurious fabrics. The company, now part of the SIL Holdings Group of companies, continues to be privately owned and its philosophy remains the same today as always - "to produce a product of the highest quality and luxury using only the finest natural fibres".

From the purchase of the raw materials to the finished product all the manufacturing processes are undertaken in Yorkshire, the traditional home of woollen textile manufacturing.

The company moved premises from its original mill buildings in 2004. Whilst Joshua Ellis is rightly proud of its heritage and tradition, the company is now perfectly placed to meet the challenge of the modern textile industry.
